For the second consecutive year, Securian Financial was recognized a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” on the Disability Index and received a top score of 100. This recognition acknowledges the company’s commitment to advancing disability inclusion and building a workforce where all employees can contribute and drive long-term success.
The Disability Index measures performance across six key areas, including culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, employment practices, community engagement, supplier inclusion, and responsible procurement.
Each participating company receives a score on a scale of zero to 100, with those earning 80 and above recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.” Securian scored 100 this year and 90 last year.
“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition again,” said Sheryl Vaz, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion consultant. “And while we are happy with our score of 100, we still have work to do to ensure we are continuing to keep inclusion for associates with disabilities top of mind.”
The Disability Equality Index was created in 2015 and was originally developed as a joint initiative of Disability: IN and the Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). A score of 100 does not indicate or imply perfection. There is always room to advance disability inclusion regardless of one’s score. A score of 100 indicates adherence to many leading disability inclusion practices.
“Benchmarking, metrics and listening help us foster and maintain a supportive atmosphere where all associates can do their best work,” said Tariq Malik, second vice president and chief diversity officer.
After getting last year’s feedback, the DEI office engaged with the Mental Health and Disability (MW&D) associate resource group to address gaps and make improvements.
“The MW&D group is committed to supporting the diverse needs of our associates,” said Don Rosenthal, user experience manager and co-lead of MW&D. “We’re building on the strong foundation set by previous leaders, and tools like the Index help guide our continued progress.”
Progress over the past year included adding language to our company website about how to request accommodations for completing job applications and making sure all candidates are aware of the option to request accommodations for interviews.
We also started disability inclusion training open to all associates together with Lifeworks, an organization dedicated to disability inclusion through training and consulting.
Every day, nearly three thousand people come together to power Securian Financial. As a company, Securian is committed to fostering a welcoming and empowering environment where every associate is valued and heard.
