Mortality credits program

Improved underwriting classes

We have developed a program for improving our underwriting standards through ongoing research and development. Our mortality credits program provides opportunities for better-than-published guidelines decisions for many of your clients.

Please note: The guidelines below assume no other exceptions are being made.

Improved tobacco classes

With the mortality credits program, infrequent tobacco users can still qualify for Non-Tobacco rates.

Tobacco uses include cigar, pipe, chew, cigarettes and nicotine surrogates.

Improved non-combustible tobacco classes

With the mortality credits program, non-combustible tobacco users can qualify for Non-Tobacco rates with one underwriting class downgrade.

Non-combustible tobacco uses include chewing tobacco, snuff and e-cigarettes.

  • Thiocyanate (tobacco combustion marker) is negative

Build stretch guidelines

When it comes to your client's build, our underwriters will look to make a one rate class improvement on standard or better offers as long as the client otherwise qualifies for the better rating.

Preferred Select

  • Build meets Preferred class criteria
  • Client meets all other Preferred Select criteria

Preferred

  • Build meets Non-Tobacco Plus class criteria
  • Client meets all other Preferred criteria

Non-Tobacco Plus

  • Build meets Non-Tobacco Plus class criteria
  • Client meets all other Non-Tobacco Plus criteria

Driving history improvements

If the proposed insured is within three months of qualifying for Preferred Select, Preferred or Non-Tobacco Plus rates and the individual otherwise qualifies for this class without making any other exceptions, we will allow approval at the higher class.

Improved family history class impact

If the proposed insured is within three months of qualifying for Preferred Select, Preferred or Non-Tobacco Plus rates and the individual otherwise qualifies for this class without making any other exceptions, we will allow approval at the higher class.

Preferred Select 

Guideline

No death of a parent or sibling before age 60 due to coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease or cancer of breast, colon, ovary, pancreas, prostate, stomach, melanoma

Qualification

If the first-degree relative died at age 58 or 59, it is ok to consider for best class.

  • Family History of Cancer: If only one parent or sibling has died of cancer prior to the age of 60, and the insured has outlived that relative by 5 years, can consider for Preferred Select.

Guideline

No death of a parent or sibling before age 60 due to coronary artery disease or cerebrovascular disease.

Qualification

If the first-degree relative died at age 58 or 59, it is ok to consider for best class.

  • Family History of Coronary Artery Disease and Stroke: If one primary relative died before age 60 due to coronary artery disease or stroke but Proposed Insured is at least 5 years older than age at death of that relative and meets all of the following: Proposed Insured has no history of Impaired Fasting Glucose or Diabetes, and current A1c is below 5.7; LDL <100; blood pressures <135/85

Non-tobacco Plus

Guideline

No more than one death of a parent or sibling before age 60 due to coronary artery disease or cerebrovascular disease.

Qualification

If the first-degree relative died at age 58 or 59, it is ok to consider for best class.

Improved cholesterol classes

With the mortality credits program, clients with higher cholesterol can still qualify for preferred rates.

Preferred Select

  • Cholesterol less than or equal to 250 and ratio 4.5
  • May include treatment for hypertension and/or cholesterol

Preferred

 Up to age 50:
  • Cholesterol less than 270 and ratio less than 6.0
  • No treatment for hypertension or cholesterol
 Ages 50 and older:
  • Cholesterol up to 300 and ratio up to 6.0
  • Cholesterol less than 300 and ratio less than 5.0
  • No treatment for hypertension or cholesterol

Non-Tobacco Plus

  • Cholesterol up to 300 and ratio up to 7.0
  • No treatment for hypertension or cholesterol
