Dave Kuplic named president of Advantus Capital Management
Mike Steinert joins asset manager as vice president and chief compliance officer
ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Advantus Capital Management, an asset management subsidiary of Securian Financial Group, has promoted Dave Kuplic to president, effective November 13, 2017.
Kuplic has more than 28 years of investment and leadership experience. After managing investments for American Express Financial Corporation’s insurance portfolio for 13 years, Kuplic joined Advantus in 2004 to lead its investment strategy, research and quantitative analysis functions.
His responsibilities expanded to include chief investment officer for Securian and president of Securian Funds Trust — a group of funds offered through variable insurance contracts issued by Securian’s insurance subsidiaries — along with operations, finance, legal and compliance.
Kuplic’s success in managing insurance assets has contributed significantly to the growth of Securian’s investment portfolio and strong risk management profile.
Kuplic earned a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in business from Minnesota State University-Mankato.
He serves as a board member and vice chair of the investment committee for Allina Health and as a board member for the Carlson Funds at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Kuplic is also a board member, treasurer and chair of the finance committee for the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
Mike Steinert joined Advantus as vice president and chief compliance officer on August 1, 2017. Steinert is responsible for compliance matters related to Advantus and for Securian Funds Trust.
Prior to joining Advantus, Steinert worked for nine years as a member of Securian’s legal team on matters including investment management and advisory services, insurance product manufacturing and distribution, registered insurance and investment products, and business development.
Over the past three years, he has worked closely with Advantus on legal and regulatory matters related to Securian Funds Trust.
A former U.S. Marine Corps military police officer, Steinert has worked in the financial services industry since 2001. He earned a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.
“Advantus serves an important role managing the general accounts of Securian’s insurance subsidiaries and has significant opportunities to grow its third-party asset management business,” said Chris Hilger, Securian’s chairman, president and CEO. “Dave and Mike are highly talented professionals and we are very fortunate to have them leading Advantus forward.”
