2022 Corporate Equality Index: Securian Financial maintains score of 90

Continued integration of LGBTQ+ friendly workplace policies delivered consistent results

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI) is the nation’s leading benchmarking survey and report that measures corporate policies and practices for LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

Securian Financial participated in the CEI for the first time in 2020, earning a score of 85 out of 100. Since then, we've continued to grow our LGBTQ+ inclusiveness. Through proactive efforts, we increased our score to 90 in the 2021 and 2022 reports.

A key 2021 growth area Securian Financial was able to highlight in the most recent survey was joining more than 500 other U.S. companies as part of the Business Coalition for the Equality Act. This federal legislation would provide the same basic protections to LGBTQ+ people as are provided to other protected groups under federal law.

“In each of the three years we’ve participated in the survey, we’ve been able to report on our growth in the areas evaluated,” says Chris Hoegh, Securian Financial project management consultant, who led the team completing the survey. “We’re pleased to retain our score of 90 from last year and continue to find opportunities to progress in our LGBTQ+ initiatives, which matter to our employees, customers and channel partners.”

The CEI rates companies on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars:

  • Non-discrimination policies across business entities
  • Equitable benefits for LGBTQ+ workers and their families
  • Supporting an inclusive culture
  • Corporate social responsibility

“Participating in the CEI is one way we show our ongoing support for LGBTQ+ employees and families,” says Dexter Davis, Securian Financial’s chief diversity officer and 2nd Vice President, Talent Management. “It’s a significant component of how we proactively work to create an effective diversity, equity and inclusion program that is sustainable, transparent and helps us engrain DEI into our organization.”

The results of the 2022 CEI highlight how 1,271 U.S.-based companies promote LGBTQ-friendly workplace policies in the U.S., as well as how the 56 percent of CEI-rated companies with global operations are helping advance LGBTQ+ inclusion in workplaces abroad.
