Securian Financial scores 90 in Human Rights Campaign’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index

Continued improvements to LGBTQ+ friendly workplace policies led to 5-point increase over 2020

The Corporate Equality Index (CEI) is the nation’s leading benchmarking survey and report that measures corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality.

Securian Financial participated in the CEI for the first time in 2020, earning a score of 85 out of 100. This year we achieved a score of 90 by adding language to our philanthropic grant giving policy that explicitly prohibits support for organizations who discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability or any other legally protected characteristics. The Securian Financial Foundation does not knowingly award grants to organizations that discriminate in their hiring, those they accept as volunteers, or the clients they serve.

“It is exciting to see our score increase over last year through our dedication to become a more inclusive company,” says Chris Hoegh, Securian Financial project management consultant, who led the team completing the survey. “Our participation in this survey is important, and our high score is meaningful to our LBGTQ+ employees, our customers and our channel partners.”

The CEI rates companies on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars:

  • Non-discrimination policies across business entities
  • Equitable benefits for LGBTQ+ workers and their families
  • Supporting an inclusive culture
  • Corporate social responsibility

Pride at Securian Financial, the company’s LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG), spearheaded the company’s efforts to participate in the Index. The process includes a survey across each criteria and examples of our commitment to LGBTQ+ support.

“We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive culture where our employees are confident in being themselves at work,” says Dexter Davis, Securian Financial’s chief diversity officer and senior director, Talent Management. “Participating in the CEI is one way we show our ongoing support for LGBTQ+ employees and families.”
