Underwriting

The continued strength and success of Securian Financial Group depends on our investment in underwriters who bring their ingenuity, hard work, integrity and dedication, each and every day. Underwriters must possess practical business sense and understand how cutting-edge issues affect long-term risks associated with financial planning and life insurance.

Securian underwriters research emerging health and workplace issues, while developing relationships with the home office and our sales force. Solid negotiation skills, problem-solving ability, exceptional interpersonal skills and analytical ability to properly assess risks are vital components of a successful underwriter.

Underwriting professionals have diverse educational backgrounds. English, business, biology and math majors have all excelled as underwriters with Securian. The position’s high level of responsibility requires excellent human relations skills, initiative, creativity, self-discipline and a probing mind. Candidates should also have a proven record of academic success and strong leadership skills.

What to expect
Sound underwriting relies on department teamwork. Underwriters work closely with other associates, sharing ideas and learning from one another. As problem-solvers, our underwriting associates make significant decisions with far-reaching impact. At Securian, underwriting assistants:

  • Evaluate and make decisions on risks and costs of providing insurance policies to applicants.
  • Work closely with senior underwriters and upper level management to expand and refine knowledge of risk approvals.
  • Work directly with field and home office associates to secure confidence in the Company’s team management approach to underwriting.
  • Assist other underwriters in completing daily case work, special projects and other tasks which contribute to department goals and objectives while enhancing personal development.
  • Build relationships and develop careers through industry study programs and in-house course work preparing associates for greater responsibility.

Career development
Securian’s comprehensive training program is recognized industry-wide as the finest available. Associates learn about basic risk selection, and become intimately familiar with all aspects of the Company’s operations.

Securian broadens associates’ insurance background and enhances professional development through on-the-job training with experienced underwriters, interaction with our sales force, presentations, reading assignments, classroom and video instruction and seminars with our Medical department.

Exposure to all aspects of the Company’s operations – from sales to budgets and new product development – provides excellent career opportunities within the Company’s operating divisions.
