Information Services

Securian Financial Group’s dynamic information services environment – repeatedly ranked by Computerworld magazine as one of the top 100 places to work – implements superior information systems by combining personal service with leading-edge technology. Our investment in technology professionals, who bring their ingenuity, hard work, integrity and dedication, each and every day, is equally critical to our future success and yours.

As a member of our professional Information Services staff, you will receive customized, self-paced training. You will then partner with areas of the Company – including investments, sales and marketing, accounting, administration, claims, underwriting and field support – to provide technology solutions that create a competitive advantage and solve business challenges.

We hire candidates with varied backgrounds in MIS, computer science and math. Academic accomplishments and analytical ability are important, as are demonstrated leadership ability, internship experience and other work-related experience. We place tremendous value on communication skills, and are particularly interested in candidates with well-rounded backgrounds.

What to expect
As a Securian programmer analyst in application development, your responsibilities encompass a variety of tasks:

  • Design and develop new applications/systems
  • Implement and integrate software packages with other Securian systems
  • Support, maintain and problem-solve production systems and applications
  • Learn new tools and technologies

Securian’s web and client/server development toolset includes Java/J2EE, ASP, COM+, Powerbuilder, Visual Basic and C++. We use Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, Access and IMS database management systems applications. They often are integrated with other technologies such as imaging, web reporting and electronic document distribution. We use current IBM mainframe technologies and multiple network operating systems such as Windows 2000 and Unix.

Career development
One of Securian’s greatest strengths is the Company’s commitment to placing associates in professional careers offering the responsibilities and challenges they seek. We promote from within, offering advancement opportunities to associates who demonstrate ability and dedication. Career opportunities exist in a wide range of technical and managerial directions.

Network Systems is responsible for the design, implementation, technical support and management of Securian’s enterprise network, including our downtown “Campus Network” and our coast-to-coast “Wide Area Network.” This area also provides support for corporate telecommunications.

Data Management is responsible for the integrity and performance of the Company’s database systems. Systems Engineering supports our mainframe technical infrastructure and performs capacity planning. Production Management manages mainframe storage and production batch processing, while Production Services supports and monitors the overall production operations environment.

Internship opportunities
In addition to full-time positions, Securian also offers internships in Information Services. Our internships offer qualified candidates hands-on experience and the opportunity to preview actuarial job responsibilities, learn about the Company, its culture and the responsibilities that accompany full-time work at Securian. It also helps the Company ensure that candidates we hire for full-time positions are a good fit.
