Accounting

We invest in people throughout Securian Financial Group’s four financial accounting areas – Financial Reporting, Expense Accounting, Investment Accounting and Fund Accounting – to perform functions critical to our success.

Securian seeks the best people to join our Company – individuals who bring their ingenuity, hard work, integrity and dedication, each and every day. We look for candidates with well-rounded backgrounds, proven academic success and effective communication skills, demonstrated leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills.

What to expect
Careers in our Accounting department provide opportunities for associates to enhance their leadership skills and learn more about different areas of the Company. Job responsibilities in the Accounting area vary by function.

Financial Reporting
Financial Reporting is responsible for the Company's financial statement process, including researching and establishing the Company's GAAP and Statutory accounting policy, testing and reviewing changes to accounting data, coordinating financial information with a variety of sources and coordinating the preparation of internal, regulatory and audited financial statement filings.

Associates in Financial Reporting ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data. Through the research and implementation of accounting policies, associates become a resource for many different areas of the Company and a key liaison with external auditors. Positions in this area also allow associates to coordinate various required filings, recommend and inform management of new disclosure and audit requirements and communicate financial data throughout the organization.

Expense Accounting
Expense Accounting is responsible for a variety of Company functions associated with expense management. The most notable functions include the annual budgeting process, cost accounting, expense reporting and analysis, accounts payable and travel/fleet administration. Expense Accounting prepares the investment schedules included in the Company's quarterly and annual external financial reports and provides critical information to Company management.

Because the financial environment calls for significant efforts towards expense management, Expense Accounting associates are continually challenged to meet the Company's changing expense management needs – for our strategic business units, corporate departments and subsidiaries.

Investment Accounting
Investment Accounting associates research and develop new GAAP and Statutory accounting policies for invested assets, maintain investment accounting records and internal controls for Securian, its subsidiaries and other investment portfolios.

Fund Accounting
Fund Accounting provides daily accounting and calculates daily net asset values, unit values and distribution rates for our Asset Management business unit’s mutual and series funds and for the Company’s separate accounts. They complete regulatory financial reporting for shareholders, including annual and semiannual reports, prospectuses, Schedule Ds, income tax returns and excise tax returns. Fund Accounting also researches and implements accounting and tax policies for the Company's mutual funds and separate accounts. This financial information is prepared by a third-party company and overseen and managed by Securian's Fund Accounting department.

Career development
One of Securian's greatest strengths is the Company's commitment to placing associates in professional careers offering the responsibilities and the challenges they seek. We promote from within, offering advancement opportunities to associates who fully demonstrate ability and dedication.

We provide a strong focus on both industry and professional training to help you fully explore your potential. Continuing educational programs can include internal, external and college courses, as well as memberships in professional organizations.

Career opportunities exist in a wide range of professional and managerial positions in Financial Reporting, Expense Accounting, Investment Accounting and Fund Accounting.
