For over 20 years, Securian Financial Group has invested in the development of students defining their career interests – individuals who exhibit ingenuity, hard work, integrity and dedication – through our Summer Internship Program.

More than a summer job, our Summer Internship Program provides valuable hands-on experience, an opportunity to apply classroom learning to the business world and the chance for students and the Company to get acquainted. Internship opportunities are available in information services, actuarial science and our Management Development Program, a customized career track for emerging leaders.

Responsibilities are similar to those of a full-time associate – approximately 80 percent of the tasks relate to the intern's career path – and all internships are paid. Interns work with associates in a particular field, learning about the Company, its culture and the responsibilities that accompany a career with Securian. And we give successful interns first consideration for full-time positions within the Company. Interns attend a series of seminars with guest speakers, from our CEO and senior executives to new associates beginning their careers. These seminars provide an overview of our business, and interns have the opportunity to develop relationships with their peers and other professionals within the organization.

We look for candidates with proven academic success and effective communication skills, demonstrated leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills and abilities specific to an internship – the same qualities Securian seeks when interviewing candidates for full-time positions. We begin interviewing for internships in the fall and look for candidates to participate in the Summer Internship Program between their junior and
senior years.

Actuarial Science internships
Our Summer Internship Program gives students interested in becoming an actuary an opportunity to explore the field as a career option and helps the Company recruit full-time actuarial analysts. A variety of research activities provide an overview of the actuarial science profession and may include expense, mortality, lapse and interest studies.

Information Services internships
While most Information Services interns work in application development, internships are also offered in our Development Support, Network Services, Technical Services and Information Security areas. Whether classroom-based or individually paced self-study with close advisor interaction, training is offered to help interns perform their duties better.

For interns working in application development, training is usually an abbreviated version of the full-time programmer analyst training program. It will cover skills needed for the development or support of applications, including coding, testing and debugging. Upon completion of training, application development interns will work with teams of associates
performing a variety of programmer analyst activities, including work with web, client/server and/or mainframe applications.

The training and work responsibilities for interns in other areas of Information Services will be unique based on the needs of the area.

Management Development Internships
Management Development interns work on a variety of real-world projects that relate to current Company business needs. Projects are similar to those handled by full-time associates and are modeled after the rotation program for the full-time Management Development Program. Projects may include:

• Providing marketing support for products and researching effective marketing tools
• Conducting cost justification studies
• Researching and defining procedures and best practices
• Establishing departmental work standards, providing
  documentation and training
• Facilitating participative problem solving
• Evaluating and initiating quality improvements

What we look for in a candidate
We look for candidates with demonstrated leadership, analytical and communication skills, academic success and skills specific to an internship. These are the same qualities Securian seeks when interviewing candidates for full-time positions. Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and in their major.
