“At Securian, interns do much of the same work as other employees, which gives them a great idea of the job duties required for a full-time position.“ Jarod has been named to the Dean’s List for the past two semesters. He earned his Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 2003. As an assistant to the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering for the past year, Jarod has answered students’ questions about coursework and handled various other administrative tasks. For four years during high school, Jarod worked in various supervisor positions for a fast food chain.
“Securian’s internship program is different from other companies because of their focus on people. I felt they really knew me, and recognized me as more than just another resume.“ Erin has been named to the Dean’s List for the past two semesters. She is also a scholar with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She has been a member of the Actuarial Club since 2006. For the past eight years, she has also been active in her church choir – both as a vocalist and as a leader – and served as costume director for the spring musical. She has worked as a supervisor with a local nursery for several years, and has also performed many roles as an ambassador in her local community.
“I wanted actual actuarial experience and the program at Securian is top notch giving up-and-coming actuaries a feel for the field.“ Brian was named to the Dean’s List for University of Minnesota - Duluth for six semesters. He earned the Robert L. Senkler Scholarship, sponsored by Securian, in 2006. Brian also pursued his passion for music as a member of the University Concert and Bands. Brian worked as a junior loan officer for a financial services firm during college vacations and as a computer systems assistant at the University of Minnesota - Duluth for the past three years.Actuarial Science | Information Services | Management Development
“Securian is made up of talented and friendly professionals. There are many opportunities provided throughout the intern program to see other areas of the Company, as well as spend quality time with company leaders such as the CEO and CIO.“ Jared is a member of two National Honors Societies – Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Kappa Phi. He is also a member of the Professional Business Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. His volunteer experiences include Adopt-A-Highway and the Salvation Army's Bundle-Me-Warm program. Over the past six months, Jared has interned in the IT department of a Mankato-based corporation. He is skilled in the use of a number of software applications and several programming languages including HTML, Java, Python and SQL. He has also worked as a disc jockey, a sales representative and a grounds keeper.
“This program provides me with a manager and a mentor, of whom I can ask questions about the company or the project I am working on. Everyone is always willing to help.” Kristen has been honored to receive a St. Catherine's Presidential Scholarship for five semesters. She is an active member of the Economics club, serving as secretary and coordinating the club's web site. During the summer of 2006, Kristen was a computer programming intern with a St. Paul firm. Through a second computer programming job at St. Catherine’s, she was able to apply and develop her computing skills. Kristen has also worked as a pre-calculus teaching assistant in the Computer Science department, and as a student assistant in the President’s Office.
“Interns at Securian work on actual projects that help out the company instead of just busy work. I’m interested in a full-time position at Securian because they really care about their employees and everyone is friendly. I never have to worry about asking a question.” Mindy’s academic achievements are underscored by nomination to St. Scholastica's Dean's List for three consecutive years. She is also a member of the National Scholars Society. During the summer of 2006, Mindy served as an information services intern with a nationally known lawnmower manufacturer, developing websites and researching SAP Enterprise Portal and CYA SmartRecovery. As a St. Scholastica IT Help Desk assistant for two years, Mindy has assisted other students with computer issues over the phone and in person. She has also tutored Java Programming Tutor and American Sign Language.
“I heard about the internship program through a friend who was an intern in Summer 2006. All he had to say were positive things, and it intrigued me to pursue the opportunity, and here I am.” Stephanie was named to St. Benedict’s Dean’s List for two semesters. She has participated in numerous leadership activities including coaching youth soccer and serving as a YMCA volunteer. She has also served as a volunteer with Astride, assisting youth and adults with physical and mental disabilities to ride horses. For the past three years, Stephanie has worked as a Perkins Loan assistant at Saint Benedict's, analyzing credit reports and handling other responsibilities. For one semester, she served as a Math teaching assistant and tutor. From 2002 through 2005, she also worked as a customer service associate for a major retailer.
“I pursued an internship with Securian because it offers numerous opportunities for advancement and provides interns with valuable experience.“ Andrew was named to the UMD’s Dean’s List for four semesters. Andrew's on-campus involvement includes serving as the International Club Vice President and as a math tutor from spring 2005 until present. Andrew has built a broad range of computer skills, including proficiency in Java, C++ and several other languages, systems and software by working on a variety of IT projects at UMD. During the summer of 2006, he was an electrical engineer for a paper mill. He has also served as a UMD Information Technology System and Services lab consultant since 2004.
“When I came for my interview, I was very impressed with all of the people that I talked to. I really liked the culture of the company. I am able to work with fun, talented individuals.“ David was named to Loras College's Dean's List for six semesters. Additional honors include Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor with the Order of the Arrow. He is secretary of the Association for Computers and Machinery. He is also a member of the Delta Epsilon Sigma fraternity. During the 2005-2006 academic year, David was an intern with a firm in Dubuque, Iowa. For two years, David has worked in the college's Admissions office as a student ambassador. He has also pursued his passion for social work by working for the Girls-At-Risk program in Dubuque.
“My leadership experiences from college helped me to prepare for my Securian internship because I had the developed the ability to work independently and also to work well and communicate with my teammates.“ Jaclyn was a member of the National Honor Society for three years. She was also a member of the Jazz Band for three years and a member of the Math and Computer Science Club. As a University IT Helpdesk assistant for the past academic year, Jaclyn has applied her computing skills by helping students and faculty resolve technical issues. She is proficient in C++, Java, PHP, SQL, HTML and NetBeans. This year, she also worked as lab attendant responsible for answering programming questions and as a library assistant. Her other work experience includes serving in a managerial role with a sandwich chain.
“It (Securian) is a wonderful organization with an amazing workforce. I want to be a part of it.” Kittu has been named to the Institute of Technology Dean's List. She also won awards at the 2003-2005 regional conferences for the Business Professionals of America, advancing to state competition. As a member of the Future Problem Solvers, Kittu also advanced to state competition in both 2003 and 2004. Over the 2006-2007 academic year, she has participated in INROADS. Kittu's technical skills include programming experience in Java and C, and familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems.
“I pursued a summer internship with Securian because of their strong reputation of treating their interns as real employees who work on real projects.“ Joshua participated in the Campus Crusade for Christ and also served as a volunteer in the Hurricane Katrina Relief effort during spring break 2006. During the summer of 2006, Joshua was an intern in the IT department at a printing company, assisting in new system information gathering, preparing reports using Oracle Discoverer and building a prototype using Java Swing. In addition, he is skilled in SQL, HTML, JSP and Python. He has also worked in supervisory/customer service roles with a well-known grocery chain and a local nursery.
“I wasn’t just thrown into a cubicle and told what I would be doing. Securian offered me quality training and prepared me. The training material I was given was specialized for me.“ As a volunteer for St. Scholastica’s television news program, Jacob was responsible for shooting and editing video for news stories. He also volunteered at a local computer shop, learning computer reporting and maintenance skills. Jacob has worked on several computer-related projects, including designing the sound elements for a theatrical play, designing games for a video game class project and for a class project. He has a variety of other work experiences, including working for his family's tree business, maintenance work for a summer camp in the town in which he lives and for a grocery chain.
“Not only are interns at Securian given ample technical training in order to build their skillset, but the Company also provides many other kinds of soft-skills training that you can take advantage of.“ William co-founded and served as the president of the St. Olaf Bridge Society. He also served as vice president of the Viking Chorus during the 2004-2005 academic year and as a member of the Chapel Choir during the 2005-2006 academic year. Since fall 2006, William has served as a resident assistant at St. Olaf. On campus, he has also built his information services-related skills through a variety of positions, including lab teaching assistant, undergraduate researcher in the area of high performance computing, software design grader and as an assistant Macintosh specialist. “As an intern, you are a valued employee with delegated responsibilities similar to employees who have been working here for years. Mentors and supervisors are all very good at making the situation and experience comfortable and worth while, as well as challenging and exciting.“ Trevor has a broad range of music-related interests. He joined the St. John’s Choir after serving as the President of the Bemidji High School A Cappella choir. He also participates in intramural softball and hockey. Since 2004, Trevor has served as a leadership facilitator at Camp RYLA, at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. In this role, he worked with high school students to develop leadership skills, and organized group discussions and activities. His other working experience includes working for a landscaping company.
“Everyone that I have met at Securian wants you to succeed and goes out of their way to provide you with the resources to do so. The minute I entered my project area, I was treated as though I was a crucial part of the project team.” Rebecca was named to the Dean’s list for three semesters. Her community involvement includes volunteering for the United Way in Aurora, Illinois. She has also served as a junior counselor at St. Olaf, responsible for mentoring first year students and organizing social and educational events. For the past two years, Rebecca has assisted students in locating resource materials as a science library administrative assistant at St. Olaf’s Glascoe Library. She has pursued her interest in golf and gained additional experience in various summer jobs at golf courses in Illinois and South Dakota.
“We were able to submit our preferences for the project we would be working on. According to those preferences, we were assigned projects in areas throughout the company – an actual project that will impact the organization.“ Nicole was named to the St. Olaf College Dean’s list for three consecutive semesters and received St. Olaf College’s Honors Recognition in 2005 and 2006. She has served in the treasurer role as an executive member of the Thorson Hall Council. At St. Olaf, she worked as a teaching assistant in the Economics department. During the summer of 2006, she was a conversion analyst with a company in the long-term care market. She has worked on several projects for Minnesota companies and was a Mayo Scholars intern in early 2007.
“The training process provides you with any and all information you need, and an outstanding network to go along with it. There are more than enough opportunities to learn something new.“ Bill received a St. John’s Residential Scholarship, and was named to the Dean’s List for the past five semesters. He has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and participated in the Outdoor Youth program. During the summer of 2006, as a finance intern for a Twin Cities community, Bill developed and analyzed budgets and performed additional finance-related responsibilities. At St. John’s, he was a resident assistant at Dormitory Hall for the 2005-2006 school year, and also worked as a teacher’s assistant in the Computer Science department for the past six months.
“It (Securian) offers me a real world project and not just busy work for the summer. The program is centered on leadership development and offers opportunities to learn and grow outside of your project area.“ Mary Rose was named to Creighton’s Dean’s List for three semesters. Her college activities include participation in the Anna Tyler Waite Leadership program for two years. She was also captain of the Creighton University Club Crew Team in 2004-2005, and a leader of the 24-Hours Fall Retreat in 2006. Mary Rose’s work experience includes serving as co-chair of the Executive Business Symposium for the past year, recruiting over 30 executives to speak at the event. For the past year, she has also held the position of Judicial Board President for the Delta Zeta Sorority.
“It (Securian) was one of the few financial companies that had opportunities other than as a financial representative. The idea of getting a feel for a lot of different areas of a business appealed to me and that’s one of the strengths of the Securian program.“ Ross served as a Student Activities Council member, as the vice president of Finance for Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and as a freshman orientation assistant. For six semesters, he was named to Luther’s Dean’s List and received a Presidential Scholarship. At Luther, Ross has served as a research assistant in a work study program, analyzing the impact of changing technology on business. He has also worked as a general laborer for the State of Minnesota’s Division of Trails and Waterways, and a natural resource worker for the State Parks.
“I believe that I will walk away from this internship feeling that I have contributed to Securian’s legacy of success. Each Management Development intern works independently, with support available and on projects that actually matter.“ Over the past year, Quinten served as a University Student Representative for the University of Iowa Admission Committee, as a Board member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and as a Student Judicial Judge. He was also a member of the University of Iowa Debate Team for two years and was Secretary for the Dean's Advisory Committee. During the 2006-2007 academic year, Quinten was selected as a Scholar at the H John Hawkinson Institute of Business Finance. He has worked as a student office assistant for the MBA Program at the University of Iowa. He has also worked as a property caretaker for an Iowa municipality.
