Competitive salary
Each year, Securian completes an extensive review of pay in the marketplace. The results of this analysis are used to ensure competitive pay. Our goal is to provide compensation opportunities for associates that are competitive with those offered by companies similar in size, location and business type. Our compensation programs are designed to be:

  • Competitive
    At Securian, job performance drives merit increases. We set standards and measure associate performance to those standards. Paying for performance is particularly effective. This arrangement allows associates the opportunity to improve and expand their skills and affect their merit increases based on an individual performance level.
  • Equitable
    Job grades are assessed regularly to ensure jobs of similar size are paid comparably for internal equity. Our pay programs are designed to be fair, consistent and apply to all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Flexible
    We use various forms of compensation to encourage associates to meet or exceed individual, team and Company goals.
  • Easy to understand
    In order for associates to understand the link between their performance and compensation, our program is easily communicated and understood. We reward innovation and exceptional contributions through:

Positive relationships
Three key pieces contribute to job satisfaction — the value of working with good people, having a flexible environment and working for an employer that serves as a community leader. Here is a sampling of the programs Securian offers to promote positive internal and external relationships:

  • Noontime Seminars
    These free seminars provide information over the lunch hour on topics such as life management, family, benefits and diversity.
  • Subsidized sports teams and special interest groups
    These social groups provide opportunities for associates to develop cross-divisional relationships outside of work.
  • Voluntary Unpaid Time-Off Program
    Associates may choose to take unpaid leave, when approved by their supervisor, for personal reasons.
  • Youth encouragement volunteer programs
    Volunteer opportunities include Black Achievers, Junior Achievement and the Multicultural Excellence Program. These programs help prepare students grades K-12 to value free enterprise, understand business and economics and be workforce ready.
  • Matching Gift Program
    This program encourages eligible associates to join in the financial support of education, cultural and arts institutions and hospitals by matching individual gifts dollar for dollar through the Securian Foundation.

Quality benefits
Our benefit programs are designed to provide financial security for associates and their families, and to protect the standard of living created by their base salary. Our comprehensive benefits package is valued at about 39 percent of an associate's salary and, in total, is competitive with those offered by most other good companies. Described below are some of Securian's outstanding benefits:

  • Retirement (Pension) Plan
    This plan provides a monthly payment to you upon retirement. The benefit is determined based on your salary and years of participation. This benefit is paid for entirely by the Company and will generally replace 40 to 50 percent of a long-tenured associate's preretirement salary.
  • Performance Share Plan (PSP)
    This plan is unique to Securian. PSP allows associates to share in the Company's success and plan for retirement through:
    • Salary Savings 401(k)
    • Company Distribution (profit sharing)
  • Long-Term Disability coverage
    This coverage provides income to replace part of the associate's earnings lost during total disability caused by illness or accident. Unlike some companies, this coverage is paid for entirely by Securian.
  • Health care
    Securian offers a variety of plan options so associates can select the plan that best meets their health care needs and financial concerns.
  • Extended Illness and Short-Term Disability coverage
    These benefits provide a high level of income protection during temporary illness or injury. These benefits are paid for entirely by the Company.
  • Life insurance options
    The Company offers several life insurance plans to help associates build their personal life insurance program. Basic Group Life is paid for by the Company. Both group and individual supplemental coverage is available at a reasonable premium rate.
  • Paid time-off
    The Company provides a generous allotment of paid time-off. In addition to receiving pay for most national holidays, associates are given vacation and personal days, creating flexibility to use time off for what's important to you.

Purposeful work
People are our greatest assets. We are committed to strengthening our associates through career opportunities and continuing education. For 125 years, we have conducted business with low turnover.

The programs listed below are a sampling of what we offer to help encourage associate growth and development:

  • Internal Job Posting Program
    The Company publicizes available positions and provides associates with an opportunity to apply. About 80 percent of our non entry-level jobs are filled from within.
  • Training and development courses and programs
    Our in-house Training and Development department offers a Spotlight Orientation Series, the Supervisory Development Program and various development and computer training classes. Industry education courses are also available.
  • Tuition Reimbursement Program
    This program covers external courses and programs at approved colleges, universities, vocational-technical colleges and certain other formal adult education programs. The amount paid is 100 percent of the tuition for approved courses (up to certain limits).
  • Temporary Assignment Bonus Program
    This program rewards hourly associates who temporarily assume higher level responsibilities with a cash award. For other employers, this may be an expectation without additional compensation.
